History

Whitaker and Mapplebeck (Cycles) Limited have been established for over 65 years. Started by Johnny Mapplebeck and Geoff Whitaker after the Second World War in 1946. The two were looking to find a job which allowed them to ride their bikes and what better way to do this than open your own cycle shop.

The pair found premises on Ingleby Road and developed a thriving business specialising in making their own Whitaker and Mapplebeck framesets which in 1952 became known as Pennine brand. Geoff left the business to pursue other interests and later Johnny became the sole owner.

In 1994 the shop re-located to the current address on Thornton Road, where Johnny continued to work in the shop which was then managed by Paul Corcoran. Aged 80 Johnny retired and moved to Canada to live with his daughter, Barabara, where he continues to ride his Pennine bikes today.

Pennine Cycles has been managed by Paul for over twenty years and he and his wife Sandra have owned the business since 2000. Together they continue to provide quality products and a first class service.
